Writing a B1 letter in German: structure, useful phrases and sample letters for DTZ and telc B1

Updated: ·

This guide shows how a B1 letter is structured, the most important useful phrases (Redemittel) in two registers, the official assessment criteria and common mistakes. After that you can read ten complete sample letters (Musterbriefe) and two e-mails. You can practise all 85 LexDeutsch letters one by one or download them as a PDF.

What does the exam expect from a B1 letter?

Two widely taken B1 exams include a letter: the German test for immigrants (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer, DTZ), run by g.a.s.t., and telc Deutsch B1 (Zertifikat Deutsch). In both you have 30 minutes for one text with four guiding points (Leitpunkte). They differ in the text type, in the choice of task and in the scoring.

FeatureDTZ (g.a.s.t.)telc Deutsch B1

In the DTZ, writing has its own part result (B1, A2 or below A2). For the B1 certificate you need B1 in speaking and B1 in either „Hören und Lesen“ (listening and reading) or writing. In telc Deutsch B1 the letter is part of the written exam; you pass if you reach at least 60 % of the points in both the written and the oral exam.

Read more: how the whole DTZ works and how A2 or B1 is calculated is explained in the guide DTZ exam B1. The format, points and pass mark of telc Deutsch B1 are covered in the guide telc B1 exam.

How is a B1 letter structured?

A B1 letter has fixed parts: the greeting, an opening that states the reason, one paragraph per guiding point, a short ending and the closing with your name. In telc Deutsch B1 the task explicitly asks you to think of a „passende Reihenfolge der Punkte“ (a suitable order of the points). In both exams, what matters is that every guiding point clearly appears in the text.

  1. Subject line (Betreff, for an e-mail): short and specific, with no full stop at the end, for example „Heizung in meiner Wohnung defekt“.
  2. Greeting (Anrede) with a comma: „Sehr geehrte Frau Wagner,“ or „Liebe Anna,“. After it you continue in lower case, except for nouns and „Sie“.
  3. Opening: state the reason in one or two sentences – „ich schreibe Ihnen, weil …“.
  4. Main part: our tip – write a separate paragraph for each of the four guiding points and link the paragraphs with „außerdem“, „deshalb“ or „aber“.
  5. Ending: ask for a reply, say thank you or say you are looking forward to something – „Ich freue mich auf Ihre Antwort.“
  6. Closing and name: „Mit freundlichen Grüßen“ (formal) or „Liebe Grüße“ (personal), without a comma, with your name below.

Our tip: at the start, note two key words for each guiding point, and at the end check verb position, endings and capital letters. As a guide we recommend about 100 to 150 words; there is no official word count.

Which useful phrases do I need – formal and informal?

Useful phrases (Redemittel) are set sentences for typical tasks in a letter: giving a reason, asking for something, apologising, saying thank you. The table shows each function in two registers: formal with „Sie“ for landlords, companies, authorities and teachers, informal with „du“ for friends and family. Stick to one register within a letter.

Asking for a replyIch freue mich auf Ihre Antwort.Schreib mir bald! / Sag mir bitte Bescheid.
ClosingMit freundlichen GrüßenLiebe Grüße / Viele Grüße

Semi-formal is a mix of both: you write „Sie“ but open in a personal way („Liebe Frau Weber,“, „Hallo Herr König,“) and close with „Viele Grüße“ or „Herzliche Grüße“. This is how people often write to neighbours, colleagues or the course teacher.

How is the letter scored in the B1 exam?

Both exams first assess whether all four guiding points are covered, and then the language. In telc Deutsch B1 a guiding point counts as covered even if it appears in just one short sentence; in the DTZ you only get full marks if all guiding points are covered precisely in content. If you leave out a guiding point, you lose points, even if your grammar is good. If the text has nothing to do with the task, it gets zero points in all criteria.

DTZ: four criteria, at most 20 points

  • I Aufgabenbewältigung (task completion): 5 points if all four guiding points are covered precisely in content; fewer points if guiding points are missing or unclear; 0 points if the text misses the topic.
  • II Kommunikative Gestaltung (communicative design), III Korrektheit (accuracy) and IV Wortschatz (vocabulary): 0 to 5 points each (B1 well met 5, B1 met 4, A2 well met 3, A2 met 2, A1 1).
  • Result: 15 to 20 points correspond to B1, 7 to 14 points to A2, 0 to 6 points to „unter A2“ (below A2).

telc Deutsch B1: three criteria, at most 45 points

  • I Aufgabenbewältigung (task completion): A if all four guiding points are covered appropriately, B for three, C for two, D for one or none.
  • II Kommunikative Gestaltung (communicative design): register, connectors and text logic. Level A is not given if the guiding points stand side by side without links, the register shifts or most sentences begin with „Ich“ or „Wir“.
  • III Formale Richtigkeit (formal accuracy): comprehensibility counts first. Mistakes in endings and gender weigh less than mistakes in agreement.
  • Points: A = 5, B = 3, C = 1, D = 0 per criterion; the total is multiplied by three, so at most 45 points.

Our tip: do not start every sentence with „Ich“. Put a time, a place or a connector at the beginning („Am Samstag …“, „Deshalb …“) – the verb stays in position 2.

10 B1 sample letters to read and practise

The ten letters come from the 85 LexDeutsch sample letters (Musterbriefe) and show typical everyday topics at B1: landlord, work, school and nursery, doctor, complaint, invitation, German course and cancellation. For each letter you see the task with its four guiding points. „Practise with translation“ opens the same letter sentence by sentence, with translation, variants and a writing exercise.

Writing a B1 e-mail: how is it different from a letter?

In telc Deutsch B1 you always write an e-mail, informal or semi-formal; in the DTZ the task can be a letter or an e-mail. The structure and guiding points are the same as for a letter. telc explicitly does not require a sender, recipient address and date as in a business letter; a subject line, greeting, opening and ending are part of it.

  • Subject line (Betreff): short and specific, with no full stop, for example „Transporter für Samstag mieten“ or „Treffen am Samstag?“.
  • Greeting and closing as in a letter; between friends „Hallo Tamara,“ is normal.
  • Paragraphs: leave a blank line between the guiding points.
  • Our tip: in the exam, use no emojis and no abbreviations such as „LG“ or „MfG“ – write the closing out in full.

Task: You are moving to a new city at the weekend and want to rent a van. Write an email to the car rental company:

Guiding points (Leitpunkte):

  1. Reason for writing
  2. From when and for how long you need the vehicle
  3. Which size?
  4. How to pay?

Which mistakes cost points in a B1 letter?

Common mistakes in a B1 letter are not only about grammar but also about form and the task: a forgotten guiding point, switching between „Sie“ and „du“, a wrong greeting. The table shows such mistakes and a better solution. At the end, read through your text with these points in mind.

Frequently asked questions

How many words should a German B1 letter have?

There is no fixed number. In the DTZ the task says „Schreiben Sie möglichst viel“, and telc Deutsch B1 sets no word count. What matters is that all four guiding points are covered. Our tip: about 100 to 150 words.

How much time do I have for the letter in the B1 exam?

In both the DTZ and telc Deutsch B1 you have 30 minutes for writing. In the DTZ, writing is part of the written exam of 100 minutes in total; in telc Deutsch B1 it is part of the written exam of 150 minutes.

What is the difference between a formal and an informal letter in German?

A formal letter goes to landlords, companies, authorities or teachers: with „Sie“, the greeting „Sehr geehrte …,“ and the closing „Mit freundlichen Grüßen“. An informal letter goes to friends or family: with „du“, „Liebe …,“ or „Hallo …,“ and „Liebe Grüße“.

Do I have to write something for all four guiding points?

Yes. The first criterion in both exams counts how many guiding points are covered. In the DTZ you only get 5 points if all four guiding points are covered precisely; in telc Deutsch B1 you only get level A with all four guiding points.

Do I need a subject line in the B1 exam?

In telc Deutsch B1 the task explicitly asks for a suitable subject line. In the DTZ the task explicitly asks for a greeting and a closing; for an e-mail a short subject line still makes sense.

How many points is the letter worth in the DTZ?

At most 20 points: 0 to 5 each for Aufgabenbewältigung (task completion), Kommunikative Gestaltung (communicative design), Korrektheit (accuracy) and Wortschatz (vocabulary). 15 to 20 points correspond to B1, 7 to 14 points to A2.

Are the sample letters available as a PDF?

Yes. All 85 LexDeutsch sample letters are in one PDF with a table of contents by topic, free, no sign-up.

Practise letters sentence by sentence

In the exercise you listen to each sentence, show the translation, choose variants and then write the letter yourself, with a word counter and a checklist. There is no automatic correction of your text.
