How many points is writing worth in telc B2 Beruf?

Writing is one of the exam’s four skills (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking), each worth 60 points, 240 in total. The 60 writing points also include the Sprachbausteine (6 points) and the phone note (6 points); most of them come from the reply to a complaint and the forum post. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points.

A good mark rests on four pillars: First, every point of the task must be covered in substance. Second, the reply email must follow the German DIN 5008 business letter layout. Third, a formal B2 register rich in noun-verb collocations counts. Fourth, disciplined pacing in both subtests prevents unfinished texts.

How should you split your writing time?

The two writing tasks sit in two different subtests of the written exam (125 minutes, no break):

Lesen und Schreiben: 20 min

Part 1: 2 questions (a/b/c) · Part 2: reply to a complaint

Solve the two reading items quickly and use the rest of the time for the reply email: respond to every point of the complaint, offer a resolution and stay polite and formal. Reading and "Lesen und Schreiben" run as one 65-minute block.

Sprachbausteine und Schreiben: 35 min

12 gaps + forum post (topic A or B)

Work through the Sprachbausteine (6 gaps with the words a–j, 6 multiple choice) quickly and keep most of the time for the forum post: give reasons for your opinion, add examples, write in paragraphs.

Final minutes

Systematic Proofreading & Polish

Check each text against four questions: Are all points of the task covered? Is the verb at the end of subordinate clauses? Is capitalisation correct? Is there NO comma after the sign-off?

Which DIN 5008 rules apply to the business letter?

Breaking these conventions looks unprofessional and can cost points in the marking:

1. The Subject Line (Betreffzeile)

Never prefix the subject line with "Betreff:". Bold the line and NEVER end it with a full stop.

Incorrect: Betreff: Beschwerde über kaputte Stühle.

2. Punctuation After Salutation

After "Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,", place a comma. The subsequent opening sentence ALWAYS starts with a lowercase letter.

Incorrect: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren! Wir möchten...

3. The Sign-off Formula (Grußformel)

The standard formula is "Mit freundlichen Grüßen". Unlike English ("Sincerely,"), German DIN 5008 strictly PROHIBITS a comma after this line.

Incorrect: Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

4. Paragraph White Space

Insert a clean blank line between introduction, body paragraphs, and sign-off. A continuous unspaced block of text costs marks for communicative design.

Incorrect: One single unspaced wall of text.

Model answer: replying to a complaint

This is what the writing task in the "Lesen und Schreiben" part looks like: your team lead forwards you a customer complaint and notes what you should address. Your e-mail must cover every point and make a clarification possible. The whole part (2 reading questions + the e-mail) takes 20 minutes. The situation and texts are a LexDeutsch example.

Situation

You work in customer service at Frischküche Catering GmbH, which delivers lunch every day to Weber Elektrotechnik GmbH. The office manager, Ms Berger, has complained. Your team lead asks you to reply to her.

The customer's e-mail

Danke! Tobias Henke

What your reply must do

  • write politely and formally (subject line, salutation, Sie form, closing)
  • apologise and show understanding
  • give the reason for the problems
  • describe the solution for the future
  • offer the credit note and make a clarification possible (e.g. offer a phone call)

Model reply (e-mail, in German)

Betreff: Ihre Beschwerde: verspätete und unvollständige Lieferungen
Sehr geehrte Frau Berger,

How the reply meets the marking criteria

I. Kommunikative Aufgabenbewältigung (task completion): Every point from the team lead is covered: apology, reason (roadworks, driver off sick), solution (second vehicle, checklist), credit note. Offering a phone call makes clarification possible.

II. Kommunikative Gestaltung (organisation): Subject line, personal salutation, one paragraph per content point, closing formula. The tone is polite and formal; connectors such as "denn", "außerdem", "deshalb", "sodass" link the sentences.

III. Formale Richtigkeit (accuracy): Clear main and subordinate clauses, correct verb position after "deshalb" and in "dass"/"sodass" clauses; simple and correct beats complicated and wrong.

IV. Spektrum sprachlicher Mittel (range): Typical workplace phrases: "Es tut uns sehr leid, dass …", "ein Fahrzeug einsetzen", "eine Gutschrift erhalten", "Ich kann Ihren Ärger gut verstehen".

Length: about 120–150 words as a guide (a LexDeutsch recommendation, not an exam requirement). What matters is that every point from the team lead appears.

Model Letters to Study & Copy

Two practice letters from working life (not exam formats: in the exam you reply to a complaint and write a forum post). Select a letter to see the scenario, content points and full text:

Practice scenario & situation:

„Your company ordered 15 ergonomic office chairs two weeks ago. Upon receipt yesterday, 4 chairs had damaged pneumatic cylinders and 3 armrests were missing. Telephone support was unreachable. Draft a formal defect claim to the furniture vendor’s managing director.“

The 4 content points of this exercise:
1. Reason for writing and precise reference to order (purchase order & delivery slip number)
2. Detailed description of defects and operational business disruptions caused
3. Explicit demand for remediation or replacement with a binding deadline
4. Legal consequences upon non-compliance (contract cancellation, claim for damages)

Mängelrüge zu unserer Bestellung vom 24. September 2026 (Bestell-Nr. BS-9042)

What criteria are the texts marked on?

Under the DTB B2 marking criteria, the reply to the complaint and the forum post are marked against these four criteria:

I. Task Completion (Kommunikative Aufgabenbewältigung)

Highest Priority

Have all points of the task been fully and substantively addressed? Omitting even one point clearly lowers the score.

II. Communicative Design

Layout & Register

Does the document comply with DIN 5008 standards? Is the tone formally appropriate and free of casual colloquialisms? Are transitions seamless?

III. Formal Accuracy

Grammar & Syntax

Grammar precision: main and subordinate clause verb positioning, noun-adjective agreements, prepositions, passive voice, and spelling.

IV. Range of Language (Spektrum sprachlicher Mittel)

B2 Professional Lexis

Use of nuanced business German lexis: noun-verb collocations (NVV), professional terminology, and avoidance of generic A2/B1 verbs.

Interactive Knowledge Check: DIN 5008 & B2 Letter Structure

Test your understanding of formal standards, task points, and word count with instant feedback.

1. What does the reply to a complaint in telc B2 Beruf (Lesen und Schreiben Part 2) require?

2. How is the subject line formatted according to the German business letter standard DIN 5008?

3. Which salutation and punctuation is required when the recipient (e.g., Dr. Müller) is known by name?

4. How many words are required for the telc B2 Beruf writing tasks?

Frequently asked questions

How many points do you need in telc B2 Beruf writing?

Writing is one of four skills worth 60 points each (240 in total); it also includes the Sprachbausteine (6 points) and the phone note (6 points). You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points.

How long is the writing part and what are the tasks?

There are two writing tasks in two subtests: the reply to a complaint in "Lesen und Schreiben" (20 minutes, together with 2 reading items) and a forum post on topic A or B in "Sprachbausteine und Schreiben" (35 minutes, together with 12 gaps).

Which forum post topic should I pick: A or B?

Pick the topic for which you can think of the most arguments, examples and specialist terms. For the reply to the complaint there is no choice: you react to the complaint you are given.

How many words should the texts have?

No word count is set; the texts are marked against the criteria. What counts is that every point of the task is fully covered. LexDeutsch tip: about 150 words per text is usually enough to develop each point well.

Which DIN 5008 rules do I need to follow in the letter?

The subject line has no “Betreff:” label and no full stop at the end. The salutation ends with a comma, and the next sentence starts in lower case unless its first word is a noun. There is no comma after “Mit freundlichen Grüßen”.

How much do grammar mistakes count compared with content?

The letter is marked on task completion, communicative design, formal accuracy and vocabulary. A few grammar slips are survivable, while a missing content point or a casual tone usually costs more. So secure content, DIN 5008 layout and a formal register first.
