Free German B2 Model Test: Every Exam Part with Sample Tasks and Answers
Updated: · LexDeutsch editorial team
Free on this page: a B2 mock exam in the format of the exam LexDeutsch trains as telc B2 Beruf (the DTB B2, Deutsch-Test für den Beruf): reading (45 min), reading and writing (20 min), listening (20 min), listening and writing with a phone memo (5 min), and language elements with a forum post (35 min), with interactive sample tasks and error analysis.

Why should you take a full mock exam before the real one?
Points are lost not only through gaps in vocabulary, but also through a lack of practice under real time limits. Anyone who has not sat a complete timed mock test before exam day easily runs short of time at the test centre – especially in the 65-minute block of reading plus “reading and writing”, and in the 35-minute section where the language elements and the forum post are done together.
The sample tasks on this page are free and follow the structure of the exam: text types, task types, typical traps and the pass rule. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points. Use this guide as your dress rehearsal for your vocational language course (DeuFöV, § 45a AufenthG).
The Written Sections with Interactive Sample Tasks
Select a section below to inspect time limits, format descriptions, and an interactive sample question with instant feedback:
Reading (Parts 1–4)
Understanding job-market information, briefings, rules on working conditions and texts on who does which task, under time pressure.
LexDeutsch tip for the 45 minutes: Part 1 (5 matching) about 10 min, Part 2 (2 true/false + 2 multiple choice) about 10 min, Part 3 (4 matching) about 10 min, Part 4 (5 multiple choice) about 15 min. No dictionaries permitted!
Interaktive Beispielaufgabe zum direkten Testen:
Sample task Part 2: An article discusses flexible working hours. What is accurate according to the text?
How do you simulate the exam under real conditions? The 5-step protocol
To get the most out of a mock test, replicate test-centre conditions as closely as possible:
Step 1: Isolate the Testing Environment
Switch off smartphones, smartwatches, and extra browser tabs. Prepare only a pen, blank scratch paper, and an analog timer. Dictionaries are prohibited!
Step 2: The Written Part in One Sitting Without a Break
Do all written sections in exam order in one 125-minute run: reading (45), reading and writing (20), listening (20), listening and writing (5), language elements and writing (35). Transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
Step 3: Single-Playback Listening
Play every recording only once, without pausing or rewinding – exactly as in the exam. Read the items before each recording and underline key words.
Step 4: Speaking Without Preparation Time
Have a study partner give you a topic and start speaking for about 2 minutes straight away – the exam has no preparation time. Then come examiner questions, a chat with colleagues during a break and solving a problem together.
Step 5: Error Analysis & Flashcard Review
Score yourself with the pass rule: at least 144 of 240 points in total and 36 of 60 in at least three skills. Record every grammar and vocabulary slip in an error-tracking journal.
How many points do you need to pass?
There are 240 points, 60 each for reading, listening, writing and speaking; the language elements and the phone memo count towards writing. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points:
| Exam Section | Maximum Points | Target (minimum) | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Reading: Reading Parts 1–4 + Reading and Writing Part 1 | 60 | 36 (min. 24) | 45 min + part of the 20 min |
| 2. Listening: Listening Parts 1–4 + Listening and Writing Part 1 | 60 | 36 (min. 24) | 20 min + part of the 5 min |
| 3. Writing: complaint reply, phone memo, language elements, forum post | 60 | 36 (min. 24) | within 20 + 5 + 35 min |
| 4. Speaking (paired exam, Parts 1A–1C, 2, 3) | 60 | 36 (min. 24) | about 16 min, no preparation |
| telc B2 Beruf overall exam (DTB B2) | 240 | at least 144 + at least 36 in 3 of 4 skills | 125 min written + about 16 min oral |
What should you watch out for in a mock exam?
Four places where points are easily lost in a mock exam:
1. Pacing Bottlenecks in Reading Part 1
Do not spend too long on the matching items in Part 1. Otherwise that time is missing for the multiple-choice items in Parts 2 and 4.
2. Domino Cascades in Language Elements
Placing a word hastily into the wrong gap in Part 1 means it is missing where it belongs. Always identify the part of speech of every gap before you place the words a–j.
3. An Incomplete Complaint Reply
Forgetting one point of the task or offering no solution in the reply to a complaint costs points for task completion.
4. Passivity in the Speaking Exam
Do not wait for your partner to lead the conversation – Parts 2 and 3 are conversations, not monologues. Take the initiative with open questions.

Frequently asked questions
Is the B2 mock exam on this page really free?
Yes. You can use the sample tasks and exercises on this page for free and without registering, right in your browser, with no subscription and no credit card. The exam simulation in the LexDeutsch exam area (reading, listening, language elements and the phone memo with a timer, without writing and speaking) is part of VIP access.
How close is the mock exam to the real telc B2 Beruf exam?
The tasks follow the structure of the DTB B2 (Deutsch-Test für den Beruf, telc): the same sections, time limits and task types, with workplace topics such as employment contracts, shift plans or complaints. They are LexDeutsch’s own practice tasks, not original telc tasks.
How many points do I need to pass telc B2 Beruf?
You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking); one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points. The language elements count towards writing.
How often should I take a full mock exam?
In the 8 to 12 weeks before the exam, plan three to four full mock exams about two weeks apart. Take the last one about five days before the real exam date.
What should I do if I score below 60% in the mock exam?
Use the result to find your weak spots. If you lose points in reading, practise skimming for signal words; if the language elements are the problem, review prepositions with fixed cases and noun-verb collocations.
Can I make notes in the test booklet?
Yes. You may mark and underline in the test booklet. Only what is on the S30 answer sheet is scored, though, so transfer your answers clearly and in time.
How do I assess my own texts in the mock exam?
Check the four criteria: did you cover every point of the task (task completion)? Is the text clearly structured, with a suitable salutation and paragraphs (communicative design)? Are grammar and spelling correct (formal accuracy), and is your vocabulary varied (range of language)?
Keep Practising in the Exam Area
In the LexDeutsch exam area, the first three tasks of every exam part are free without signing up; the mock exam with timer and score report is part of VIP.
