1. Why is the dative after "wegen" and "trotz" a mistake at work?

While conversational German frequently relies on the dative ("wegen dem Stau"), this phrasing is deemed uneducated in corporate letters, executive briefs, and administrative filings. In written standard German the genitive is the norm after these prepositions – especially in business justifications, conditions and representation.

1. Rechtssicherheit nach BGB

Klauseln wie «vorbehaltlich der Genehmigung» oder «im Falle eines Rücktritts» definieren exakte juristische Haftungsgrenzen.

2. Korrespondenz nach DIN 5008

In Betreffzeilen und Begründungen («bezüglich Ihres Schreibens», «aufgrund der Preisanpassung») ist der Genitiv Standard.

3. telc B2 Beruf: Sprachbausteine

Frage 1: Which sentence is grammatically correct in a formal B2 business letter under DIN 5008?

Frage 2: Which adjective ending is always correct in the genitive case after prepositions like "trotz" or "während"?

Frage 3: Which genitive preposition expresses a formal condition or legal reservation in contracts?

Frage 4: Which formulation contains a serious grammatical error that results in lost points in the Sprachbausteine exam?

Frequently asked questions

Can you use the dative after "wegen" or "trotz"?

In everyday spoken German you often hear the dative ("wegen dem Stau"). In business letters, official texts and the telc exam the genitive is the standard ("wegen des Staus"), and the dative is marked as a mistake there.

Which ending does the noun take in the genitive?

Masculine and neuter nouns take -(e)s: after s, ss, ß, z, tz and x the ending -es is required (des Beschlusses, des Gesetzes), and it is common with many one-syllable words (des Vertrages). Feminine and plural nouns take no ending (der Firma, der Verträge).

Which ending does the adjective take after a genitive preposition?

After a definite or indefinite article, the adjective in the genitive always ends in -en (des neuen Vertrags, einer langen Verhandlung, der wichtigen Fristen). Without an article, masculine and neuter also end in -en (trotz starken Regens), feminine and plural in -er (trotz hoher Kosten).

When do you say "innerhalb von" instead of using the genitive?

"von + dative" is correct when a plural noun follows without an article or adjective, because the genitive would not be visible: "innerhalb von zehn Werktagen". With an adjective the genitive is possible: "innerhalb zehn aufeinanderfolgender Werktage".

Do genitive prepositions come up in the Sprachbausteine of telc B2 Beruf?

Yes. In the Sprachbausteine (Part 1: 6 gaps with words a–j, Part 2: 6 gaps with three options each), prepositions and cases are among the things tested in short work texts. If the gap is followed by a genitive form such as "des Beschlusses" or "der Verzögerung", only a genitive preposition such as "aufgrund", "trotz" or "während" fits.

Which genitive prepositions can come after the noun?

Typical postpositions are "ungeachtet" ("der Bedenken ungeachtet"), "wegen" ("des Geldes wegen") and "halber" ("der Einfachheit halber"). They sound formal and appear mainly in legal and administrative texts.
