telc B2 Model Test Allgemein: Official Practice Test and Online Training
Updated: · LexDeutsch editorial team
What is a telc B2 model test?
A model test is a complete exam for practice: the same structure, the same task types and the same timings as in the actual exam, but with published answers. For telc Deutsch B2, telc itself says that Practice Test 1 (Übungstest 1) is „at the same time the model test of the exam“. So here „Modelltest“ and „Übungstest“ mean the same booklet.
What matters is the difference between telc’s two B2 exams: this model test belongs to telc Deutsch B2 (Allgemein). The job-related exam DTB B2 has its own practice test with different parts – more on this in the table below and on the page telc B2 Beruf model test.
Where can I get the official telc B2 practice test?
telc gGmbH offers Practice Test 1 for telc Deutsch B2 as a free download on the exam page at telc.net (button „Download Mock Examination“). The ZIP archive contains a PDF booklet and an MP3 file with all the listening texts. Printed booklets and further practice tests are sold in the telc shop.
The booklet contains:
- all tasks of the written exam: Reading (Leseverstehen), Language elements (Sprachbausteine), Listening (Hörverstehen), Writing (task A and B);
- the task sheets for the oral exam, with seven topics for Part 1, a discussion text and a planning task;
- the answer sheet S30 (Antwortbogen), the answer key and the listening texts to read through;
- the marking criteria for Writing and Speaking and the table „Punkte und Gewichtung“ (points and weighting).
How do I do the practice test under exam conditions?
- Set a timer for 90 minutes and do Reading and Language elements without a dictionary.
- Play the MP3 file without pausing and hear each text only once – just like in the exam (about 20 minutes).
- Choose task A or B and write at least 150 words in 30 minutes.
- Check Reading, Language elements and Listening against the answer key and work out your points.
- Assess your e-mail yourself using the three criteria – or have a teacher check it.
- Practise the oral exam with a partner: 20 minutes of preparation, then about 15 minutes of conversation.
This is how you work out the points: Reading and Listening are worth 75 points each (25 per part), Language elements 30 points (15 per part) and Writing 45 points. Together that makes 225 points for the written exam; the oral exam is worth 75 points. You pass with at least 135 points in the written exam and at least 45 in the oral exam. More on the format: telc B2 exam (Allgemein).
| Part | Tasks | Max. score |
|---|---|---|
| Reading Part 1 | 1–5 | 25 |
| Reading Part 2 | 6–10 | 25 |
| Reading Part 3 | 11–20 | 25 |
| Language elements Part 1 | 21–30 | 15 |
| Language elements Part 2 | 31–40 | 15 |
| Listening Part 1 | 41–45 | 25 |
| Listening Part 2 | 46–55 | 25 |
| Listening Part 3 | 56–60 | 25 |
So a part with five tasks is worth just as many points as a part with ten tasks. If you are confident in Reading Part 1 or Listening Part 1, you can earn a lot of points there with just a few tasks.
How does the online model test on LexDeutsch work?
Each time you start the exam simulation B2 Allgemein, it puts together a new exam: one random task each from Reading Parts 1–3, Language elements Parts 1–2 and Listening Parts 1–3, in the order of the exam. At the end you see how many answers per section were correct and the share of correct answers as a percentage.
- The simulation is part of VIP.
- Writing and the oral exam are not included – the simulation covers the parts that are worth 180 of the 225 written points in the exam.
- That is why it does not show „passed“: whether you pass the exam also depends on Writing and the oral exam.
- Every task has answers and explanations; the listening tasks have audio and a transcript.
Without VIP you practise the same task types one by one: in every part the first three tasks are free and need no login – in Reading, Language elements and Listening. In total the B2 Allgemein section has 357 tasks (116 Reading, 101 Language elements, 140 Listening).
Sample tasks: what the tasks look like
Here you see the first task from three parts of the trainer, without login. You can do them interactively – with checking and explanations – via the link under each task. The answers are at the very bottom in the expandable box.

Texts

How do I combine the practice test and training?
- At the start: the official practice test as a placement test – you see where you stand.
- After that: 20–30 minutes a day in the trainer, working on your weakest part.
- Every week: one simulation (VIP) or a round you put together yourself from the first three tasks of each part, which are free.
- Two weeks before the exam: do the whole practice test again under time pressure and compare it with your first result.
