Part 2: 6 gaps, 3 options each – elimination

Key Facts for Part 2 at a Glance

6 gaps in a business letter or workplace notice.
3 options per gap (a, b, c): exactly one fits, two are distractors.
Part 1 is built differently: 6 gaps with a shared word bank (a–j).
Time budget (guideline): about 5 minutes for Part 2 in the 35-minute subtest "Language Elements and Writing".
Scoring: 0.5 points per correct gap; the language elements count towards writing.
Transfer your answers neatly to answer sheet S30; no deduction for wrong answers.

How do you solve Sprachbausteine part 2 step by step?

How to get systematically from three options to the one correct answer per gap.

01

Predict the Missing Part of Speech and Meaning

1 Minute

In Part 2, each of the 6 gaps has three options (a, b, c). First read the whole sentence without the options and ask yourself: which part of speech is missing (preposition, connector, verb, noun)? What should the gap express? With this expectation in mind you recognise the correct option faster and are less easily fooled by similar-sounding distractors.

Concrete steps:
Identify the missing part of speech: preposition, connector, verb, noun or adverb?
Note the case after the gap (des/dem/den) if a preposition is missing.
Mark fixed nouns in the sentence that need a partner verb (Verständnis, Rücksicht, Verfügung).
Form your own solution in your head before reading a, b and c.
Looking at the three options straight away makes it easy to be led by the familiar sound of a distractor. Sentence first, then the choice.
02

Examine Punctuation, Verb Placement & Case Triggers

1 Minute

Examine each gap within the clause: is there a preceding comma? Where does the conjugated verb sit? Does a noun phrase follow in the genitive ("des Mitarbeiters") or dative ("dem Kunden")? Is there an infinitive clause with "zu"? These structural markers often rule out one or two of the three options straight away.

Concrete steps:
Comma before gap + verb at end of clause = Subordinating conjunction (sodass, da, obwohl).
Comma before gap + verb in position 2 = Conjunctive adverb (deshalb, trotzdem, andernfalls).
Gap before genitive noun = Genitive preposition (anlässlich, bezüglich, infolge, zugunsten).
Gap at end of clause following auxiliary "werden" or "haben" = Past participle (gewährleistet, vereinbart).
Do not confuse word order after "deshalb" (inversion: verb immediately follows adverb) and "sodass" (verb goes to end). Mixing them up is a typical trap.
03

Solve Fixed Light-Verb Collocations as Safe Anchors

1 Minute

Business letters often contain fixed workplace phrases: "zur Verfügung stehen", "in Kenntnis setzen", "Verständnis aufbringen", "Rücksicht nehmen", "eine Entscheidung treffen". Once you spot the noun or preposition in the text, the matching partner word among the three options is usually obvious.

Concrete steps:
Solve gaps with fixed phrases first: they give quick, safe points.
Check active vs. passive nuance (zur Verfügung stellen = active; zur Verfügung stehen = state).
Compare similar verbs: only one option forms a fixed combination with the noun.
Watch the form: after "bitten" or "versuchen" the infinitive with zu follows.
Beware of confusing similar verbs: "anbieten" vs. "aufbringen" vs. "beantragen". An ID card is extended or applied for, never "aufgebracht".
04

Check Case, Verb Position and Meaning of Each Option

1 Minute

For each gap exactly one option is correct. The other two are distractors with a concrete flaw: wrong case ("wegen dem" instead of "wegen des"), wrong verb position ("deshalb" before verb-final order), unfitting meaning ("trotz" instead of "anlässlich") or a phrase that does not exist. Name the reason for each wrong option, and your decision becomes safe.

Concrete steps:
Check contextual fit: does the sentence make sense in a business context?
Case check: is the noun after the preposition in the right case (e.g. genitive with "-es/-s")?
For verbs: match ending and form with the subject (singular vs. plural, infinitive with zu).
Name a concrete reason for both wrong options.
Do not dwell too long on one gap. Solve all the safe gaps first, then return to the difficult ones with the elimination method.
05

Transfer All 6 Gaps Neatly to the Answer Sheet

1 Minute

Transfer your answers neatly onto answer sheet S30 and follow the instructions of the invigilators. Check: is exactly one letter marked for each of the 6 gaps? Is no gap left empty? Wrong answers do not cost points.

Concrete steps:
Count: all 6 gaps of Part 2 answered, exactly one letter per gap.
Check answer sheet S30: is each answer in the right row?
Time check: plan about 10 minutes for Parts 1 and 2 together, so enough time is left for the forum post.
Never leave a gap empty: under time pressure, mark the most likely option.
The language elements and the forum post share 35 minutes. So transfer your answers right away, before you start writing.

Which grammar traps does part 2 hide?

Typical distractors in Part 2 – and how to spot them at first glance.

01Trap 1: Connectors & Verb Position

Subordinating Conjunction vs. Conjunctive Adverb

The three options often include words with a similar meaning but opposite word order: "deshalb / deswegen" (main clause, inversion: verb immediately follows) vs. "sodass / da" (subordinate clause, verb at clause end). Choosing by meaning alone while ignoring syntax easily leads to the wrong word.

Example sentence in exam format:„Die Umstellung unserer IT-Infrastruktur verzögert sich um zwei Tage, [...] wir den Server erst am Montag neu starten können.“
Falsch: deshalb (würde Inversion erfordern: „deshalb können wir den Server erst...“)
Richtig: sodass (leitet Nebensatz ein: „sodass wir den Server erst am Montag neu starten können.“)
Why this option is a trap:The conjugated auxiliary "können" sits at the very end of the clause. Therefore, only the subordinating conjunction "sodass" is grammatical. "Deshalb" would require verb inversion into position 2.
02Trap 2: Genitive vs. Dative Prepositions

Formal Corporate & Administrative Prepositions at B2

At B2 business level, high-register prepositions dominate: "anlässlich (+ Gen)", "bezüglich (+ Gen)", "infolge (+ Gen)" vs. "gemäß (+ Dat)", "entsprechend (+ Dat)". Always examine the case inflections on the following article and noun.

Example sentence in exam format:„[...] der neuen Brandschutzverordnung bitten wir alle Abteilungen um sofortige Rückmeldung.“
Falsch: gemäß (verlangt Dativ: „gemäß der neuen Brandschutzverordnung“ wäre zwar feminin identisch, passt aber semantisch nicht zur Ankündigung)
Richtig: anlässlich / bezüglich (Signal für behördlichen oder internen Anlass)
Why this option is a trap:The feminine genitive "der neuen Brandschutzverordnung" formally accepts "anlässlich" or "bezüglich". Check context: Is it an event occasion (anlässlich) or a topical reference (bezüglich)?
03Trap 3: Noun-Verb Collocations

Fixed Light-Verb Idioms in Corporate Communication

Where a fixed collocation applies, a generic verb does not fit. You do not "make" a decision, you "meet" it (eine Entscheidung treffen). You "bring up" understanding (Verständnis aufbringen). Without these partner verbs you choose the wrong option.

Example sentence in exam format:„Wir bitten alle Kolleginnen und Kollegen, für die vorübergehenden Einschränkungen Verständnis [...].“ (a) zu machen b) aufzubringen c) zu nehmen)
Falsch: zu machen / zu nehmen („Verständnis machen“ und „Verständnis nehmen“ gibt es nicht)
Richtig: aufzubringen („Verständnis aufbringen für etwas“, nach „bitten“ mit zu-Infinitiv)
Why this option is a trap:"Verständnis aufbringen für (+ Acc)" is a standard B2 collocation. After "Wir bitten …" the infinitive with zu follows: "Verständnis aufzubringen". "Machen" and "nehmen" do not combine with "Verständnis".
04Trap 4: Participle II vs. Adjective vs. Passive

Predicative Adjectives & Stative Passive Structures

Gaps at the end of clauses following forms of "sein" or "werden" often require a past participle in a passive structure: "gewährleistet", "vorgesehen", "erforderlich", "vereinbart". Pay special attention here to the difference in meaning between similar forms.

Example sentence in exam format:„Nur durch pünktliche Freigabe ist ein reibungsloser Ablauf im Betrieb [...] .“
Falsch: vorgesehen (bedeutet geplant, passt hier aber nicht zur Sicherstellung)
Richtig: gewährleistet („gewährleistet sein“ = sichergestellt sein)
Why this option is a trap:"Gewährleistet sein" means to be guaranteed or ensured. "Vorgesehen sein" merely means planned. In safety and operational contexts, German business standards mandate "gewährleistet".

b

Lücke 1: „anlässlich“

Preposition with Genitive

Context:

(1) [...] der anstehenden ISO-Zertifizierung unseres Produktionsstandorts bitten wir das gesamte Team um erhöhte Wachsamkeit. (a) laut b) anlässlich c) trotz)

On the occasion of the upcoming ISO certification of our production facility, we request heightened vigilance from the entire team.

Grammatical reason:

"Anlässlich" governs the genitive case and introduces an official occasion.

Ruling out the distractors:

a) "laut" means "according to" and does not fit an occasion; c) "trotz" contradicts the meaning of the sentence.

Frequently asked questions

How many points are the Sprachbausteine worth in telc B2 Beruf?

Each correct gap earns 0.5 points; Parts 1 and 2 with 6 gaps each are worth 6 points together. The Sprachbausteine count towards writing (60 points), not reading. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points.

How should I split the time for the Sprachbausteine?

Part 1, Part 2 and the forum post run together in the subtest "Language Elements and Writing" (35 minutes). Our guideline: about 5 minutes per part of the language elements, leaving around 25 minutes for the forum post; transfer your answers to the answer sheet right away.

Are there deductions for wrong answers?

No, points are only given for correct answers, and a wrong answer takes nothing away. So never leave a gap empty: at the end, mark the most likely option for every open gap.

How are the wrong options in Part 2 built?

The two wrong options test typical confusions: a genitive word where the dative is needed, a conjunctional adverb instead of a subordinating conjunction, a similar verb that does not combine with the noun, or a word with the wrong meaning.

How does Part 2 differ from Part 1?

In Part 1 you fill 6 gaps with words from a shared box of 10 words (a–j), and 4 words are left over. In Part 2 each of the 6 gaps has its own three options (a, b, c), exactly one of which fits.

What does Sprachbausteine part 2 test?

Mainly grammar and vocabulary in context: prepositions with a fixed case (e.g. infolge + genitive, gemäß + dative), connectors and fixed noun-verb collocations such as “zur Verfügung stehen” or “eine Entscheidung treffen”.
