telc B2 Listening Teil 4 (DTB B2): Requests by Phone
Updated: · LexDeutsch editorial team
How is Hören Teil 4 structured in the DTB B2?
The listening section of the telc B2 Beruf – officially the Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2 (DTB B2) – takes 20 minutes. Teil 4 is the last of the four parts and is called „Anliegen und Bitten erfassen“ in the test format. You hear short phone messages from everyday work, similar to voicemail messages: someone cancels an appointment, asks for something, makes a suggestion or passes on information.
| Feature | Hören Teil 4 in the DTB B2 |
|---|---|
| What you hear | five phone messages |
| Tasks | one task (36–40) per message, with three answers a, b, c |
| Structure of the task | in the practice test, the caller's name comes first, and the answers continue the sentence |
| How often | each message once |
| Points | 5 × 3 = 15 of 60 listening points |
The instructions of the Übungstest do not mention separate reading time for Teil 4, unlike for Teil 2 and Teil 3. You mark the answers on the Antwortbogen S30 (the answer sheet); wrong answers cost no points. The details on the structure come from the official Übungstest 1 for the DTB B2 (telc gGmbH, 2020, published by the BAMF); the strategy and traps are our own tips.
All skills count towards passing: at least 144 of 240 points and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills, where one weaker skill with 24–35 points is compensated. Everything else is in the guide telc B2 Beruf exam.
What matters in Teil 4?
The messages are short; almost every sentence contains information. In a few sentences, the caller usually gives their name, describes the situation and says what they want. Often all three answers pick up something from the message. But only one correctly describes what the person wants or does.
Because the task in the practice test begins with the name, the difference between a, b and c often lies in the action: „bittet um …“, „sagt … ab“, „schickt …“, „schlägt vor …“ ("asks for …", "cancels …", "sends …", "suggests …"). Sometimes, however, the answers differ in the object, the person or the time. The request can come at the end of the message, but also in the middle.
- Situation: what has happened? Sometimes the situation itself is the solution, especially when the message only informs and asks for nothing.
- Request: what does the person want – and from whom? This is often where the correct answer is.
- Two topics: some messages contain a piece of information plus an offer or a request. Check which topic the answers refer to; dates, deadlines and places count when a, b and c differ in exactly that.
Our tip: Teil 4 is good preparation for the next exam part, „Hören und Schreiben“: there you also hear a message and then fill in a phone note. The guide Telefonnotiz B2 Beruf explains how.
Which strategy helps before, during and after listening?
Before listening: read as much as possible in advance
- For one task, read the name and the three answers. In your head, cross out everything that is the same in a, b and c. What remains is the difference you listen for.
- Name this difference with one word: action (cancel or postpone?), person (the caller themselves, a colleague or a third person?), time (today or Friday?) or object.
- Our tip: the Übungstest names no separate reading time for Teil 4, and the recording is not paused. So read the first task as soon as Teil 3 is over, and the next one right after your decision – then one question in your head is enough: what is different in a, b and c?
While listening: stay open until the end
- Remember only two things: who wants something, and whether it is a request, a cancellation, a suggestion or information.
- Listen for who acts: „Ich schicke Ihnen …“ ("I will send you …") is something different from „Schicken Sie mir bitte …“ ("Please send me …").
- Wait with your decision until the message has ended; a correction or request may still come. Then look at the next task right away.
When marking and after training
- Mark each answer on the Antwortbogen S30 as the task instructions require. When unsure, choose the answer that best fits the request – wrong answers cost no points.
- After an exercise: mark the sentence with the request in the transcript. That shows you where it stands in the messages.
Our tip: keep a small list of verbs that appear in answers – absagen, verschieben, bitten, bestätigen, erinnern, vorschlagen, informieren ("cancel, postpone, ask, confirm, remind, suggest, inform") – and note a typical phrase from a message for each.
What traps are there in Teil 4? Ten checking questions
These questions help when two answers could fit. LexDeutsch wrote all the examples itself. As in the practice test, every answer begins with the caller's name; in the short excerpts it is not given every time.
| Checking question | Mini example: message → answer | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Which sentence tells me what the person expects from me? | „Unser Scanner im Empfang streikt seit gestern. Könnten Sie heute noch jemanden vorbeischicken?“ ("Our scanner at reception has been out of order since yesterday. Could you send someone over today?") → „Frau Kaya möchte einen neuen Scanner bestellen.“ ("Frau Kaya wants to order a new scanner.") | wrong: the defect is only the occasion; she wants someone to come over today. |
| 2. Who is supposed to do something in the end – and is this person named in the answer? | „Hier ist Herr Bauer von der Haustechnik. Den Schlüssel für den Besprechungsraum bringt Ihnen morgen früh mein Kollege Herr Wolf.“ ("This is Herr Bauer from building services. My colleague Herr Wolf will bring you the key to the meeting room tomorrow morning.") → „Herr Bauer bringt den Schlüssel morgen.“ ("Herr Bauer brings the key tomorrow.") | wrong: Herr Bauer is the caller, Herr Wolf brings the key. |
| 3. Is the person giving something – or do they want to receive something? | „Ich habe die Preisliste leider nicht mehr. Könnten Sie mir die aktuelle Version mailen?“ ("Unfortunately I no longer have the price list. Could you email me the current version?") → „Herr Demir schickt die Preisliste.“ ("Herr Demir sends the price list.") | wrong: he wants to receive the list. |
| 4. Is the appointment cancelled, postponed or just open? | „Den Termin am Donnerstag schaffe ich nicht. Ich melde mich nächste Woche mit einem neuen Vorschlag.“ ("I cannot make the appointment on Thursday. I will get in touch next week with a new suggestion.") → „Frau Lindner verschiebt den Termin auf nächste Woche.“ ("Frau Lindner postpones the appointment to next week.") | wrong: a new date has not been fixed yet. |
| 5. Is it a request or just information? | „Nur zur Info: Die Lieferung ist heute komplett angekommen. Sie müssen nichts weiter tun.“ ("Just for your information: the delivery arrived complete today. You do not need to do anything else.") → „Herr Albers bittet darum, die Lieferung zu prüfen.“ ("Herr Albers asks you to check the delivery.") | wrong: it is information without an assignment. |
| 6. Is something suggested – or already settled? | „Für das Abschiedsessen hätte ich an das Restaurant am Markt gedacht. Was meinen Sie?“ ("For the farewell dinner I was thinking of the restaurant at the market. What do you think?") → „Frau Roth hat einen Tisch im Restaurant reserviert.“ ("Frau Roth has reserved a table at the restaurant.") | wrong: she is only making a suggestion. |
| 7. Does the deadline belong to this task? | „Die Rechnung bezahlen wir wie immer bis zum Monatsende. Die Bestellnummer brauche ich aber heute noch.“ ("We will pay the invoice by the end of the month, as always. But I need the order number today.") → „Herr Neumann braucht die Bestellnummer bis zum Monatsende.“ ("Herr Neumann needs the order number by the end of the month.") | wrong: he needs the number today; the end of the month applies to the invoice. |
| 8. Should you call back – and under what condition? | „Wenn Sie den Raum für Freitag bekommen, müssen Sie nicht zurückrufen. Nur wenn es nicht klappt, rufen Sie mich bitte an.“ ("If you get the room for Friday, you do not need to call back. Only if it does not work out, please call me.") → „Frau Weber bittet in jedem Fall um Rückruf.“ ("Frau Weber asks for a call back in any case.") | wrong: a call back is needed only if there is a problem. |
| 9. Is there a limit hidden in „nicht vor“, „frühestens“ or „spätestens“? | „Die Ersatzteile kommen nicht vor Mittwoch.“ ("The spare parts will not arrive before Wednesday.") → „Die Ersatzteile kommen spätestens am Mittwoch.“ ("The spare parts arrive on Wednesday at the latest.") | wrong: „nicht vor Mittwoch“ means Wednesday at the earliest. |
| 10. Who is meant – one person or the whole team? | „Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen in der Spätschicht, bitte tragen Sie Ihre Wünsche für den Dienstplan bis Freitag in die Liste ein.“ ("Dear colleagues on the late shift, please enter your wishes for the duty roster in the list by Friday.") → „Herr Krüger bittet eine Kollegin, ihre Wünsche einzutragen.“ ("Herr Krüger asks one colleague to enter her wishes.") | wrong: the message is addressed to the whole late shift. |
Changed plans („Moment, ich meinte natürlich …“ – "Wait, I of course meant …") and swapped digits are covered in the guide to Hören Teil 1. These patterns can appear in Teil 4 as well, just in less space.
Our own example: one message, three answers
Message for the HR department:
„Guten Tag, hier spricht Marta Nowak aus dem Einkauf. Ich habe gesehen, dass die Schulung zum neuen Bestellsystem am 14. stattfindet. An dem Tag bin ich leider auf einer Fortbildung in Leipzig. Meine Kollegin Frau Hahn würde gern für mich teilnehmen und mir danach alles zeigen. Könnten Sie sie bitte statt meiner auf die Liste setzen? Danke!“ ("Hello, this is Marta Nowak from purchasing. I saw that the training on the new ordering system takes place on the 14th. Unfortunately, I will be at a further training course in Leipzig that day. My colleague Frau Hahn would like to attend in my place and show me everything afterwards. Could you please put her on the list instead of me? Thank you!")
| Task 38: Marta Nowak … | Fits? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| a sagt ihre Teilnahme an der Fortbildung ab. ("cancels her participation in the training course.") | no | The training course stays; she just cannot come to the Schulung. |
| b möchte, dass eine Kollegin an ihrer Stelle teilnimmt. ("wants a colleague to take part in her place.") | yes | „Könnten Sie sie bitte statt meiner auf die Liste setzen?“ ("Could you please put her on the list instead of me?") is her request. |
| c bittet um einen neuen Termin für die Schulung. ("asks for a new date for the Schulung.") | no | There is no mention of a new date. |
Answer a picks up the word „Fortbildung“, answer c the Schulung. Both words occur, but both answers miss the request.
Which signal words reveal the request?
Phone messages often follow fixed patterns. These phrases show what kind of request is coming up.
| Type of request | Typical phrases | Matching verbs in the answers |
|---|---|---|
| Reason for the call | ich rufe an, weil …; es geht um …; ich melde mich wegen … ("I am calling because …; it is about …; I am getting in touch regarding …") | informiert über, teilt mit ("informs about, reports") |
| Request | könnten Sie …; wären Sie so nett …; ich bräuchte …; ich wollte Sie bitten … ("could you …; would you be so kind …; I would need …; I wanted to ask you …") | bittet um, möchte, dass … ("asks for, wants …") |
| Cancellation | ich muss leider absagen; ich schaffe es nicht; daraus wird leider nichts ("I am afraid I have to cancel; I cannot make it; unfortunately that will not happen") | sagt ab ("cancels") |
| Postponement | können wir den Termin verlegen; lieber eine Woche später; statt Montag ("can we move the appointment; preferably a week later; instead of Monday") | verschiebt, schlägt einen neuen Termin vor ("postpones, suggests a new date") |
| Suggestion | wie wäre es mit …; was halten Sie von …; ich hätte an … gedacht ("how about …; what do you think of …; I was thinking of …") | schlägt vor ("suggests") |
| Information without an assignment | nur zur Info; Sie brauchen nichts zu tun; damit Sie Bescheid wissen ("just for information; you do not need to do anything; so that you know") | informiert, teilt mit ("informs, reports") |
| Deadline | bis spätestens …; noch heute; bis Ende der Woche ("by … at the latest; today; by the end of the week") | braucht … bis …, erinnert an ("needs … by …, reminds of") |
| Call back | rufen Sie mich bitte zurück; melden Sie sich bitte bei mir; nur wenn … ("please call me back; please get in touch with me; only if …") | bittet um Rückruf ("asks for a call back") |
How do you practise Teil 4 with the LexDeutsch trainer?
In the trainer Hören Teil 4, you hear short messages and solve tasks 36–40 with a, b or c. LexDeutsch wrote and recorded the texts and audio itself, in the exam format. You can open the transcript at any time; after checking, the trainer shows for the tasks the place in the transcript where the solution is. You can practise the first three versions of each Teil without registration; further versions are available with VIP.
- Exam mode: before the start, read only the first task, play the recording without a pause and only once, and read each further task right after your decision while the next message begins – just like in the exam, where the recording is not stopped.
- Review: in the transcript, mark the sentence with the request in each message. Is it at the beginning, in the middle or at the end?
- Transfer: for one message, write a short phone note with the name, the request and what needs to be done. That way you also practise for „Hören und Schreiben“.
The other parts: matching statements in Hören Teil 2, presentation or meeting in Hören Teil 3. Hören B2 Beruf gives an overview of all four parts.

Frequently asked questions
What do you hear in Hören Teil 4 of the DTB B2?
Five phone messages from everyday work. For each message there is one task with three answers a, b, c.
How often do you hear the messages?
Each message only once. In the DTB B2, all texts of the listening section are played once.
How many points does Teil 4 give?
Five tasks with 3 points each, so 15 of 60 listening points. Wrong answers cost no points.
Is there time to read before Teil 4?
The instructions in the official Übungstest name no separate reading time for Teil 4, unlike for Teil 2 and Teil 3. Our tip: read the first task as soon as Teil 3 is over.
What is the difference between Hören Teil 4 and the Telefonnotiz?
In Teil 4 you choose one answer a, b or c for each of five messages. In „Hören und Schreiben“ you hear one message, answer a question about the reason for the call and enter information in a Telefonnotiz (phone note); this note counts towards the writing skill.
Are the listening texts at LexDeutsch official exam tasks?
No. LexDeutsch writes and records all texts itself in the exam format; they are not original tasks from telc or the BAMF. The BAMF publishes the official Übungstest 1 with audio files on its website.
