The Decisive Benchmark for Career Advancement in Germany

Behind the name telc B2 Beruf is the DTB B2 exam (Deutsch-Test für den Beruf, telc). It is the final exam of the BAMF-funded vocational language courses at B2 level (DeuFöV, § 45a AufenthG). Many employers and authorities accept it because it shows in a practical way that you understand work instructions, take part in meetings and can reply to customer complaints in writing. Which office requires which certificate is best checked with that office in advance.

Unlike general B2 certificates, telc B2 Beruf focuses strictly on workplace situations. Instead of discussing holiday plans, you deal with delivery delays, shift handovers, working-time rules and customer claims. Relying solely on everyday vocabulary will lead to missed points.

How does telc B2 Beruf differ from telc B2 Allgemein and Goethe B2?

Many candidates wonder which B2 examination suits their goals. The following table shows the main differences in focus:

How is the telc B2 Beruf exam structured?

Four skills are assessed: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. The written exam has five parts (Lesen; Lesen und Schreiben; Hören; Hören und Schreiben; Sprachbausteine und Schreiben). Select an area to see its tasks, timing, typical traps and the best strategy:

Reading (Lesen)

45 Min. (+ 20 Min. Lesen und Schreiben)Lesen: 60 Punkte

Tests whether you understand workplace texts: short texts about the labour market (e.g. article teasers or adverts), work instructions, rules on working hours and leave, task allocations and customer complaints. Reading and "Lesen und Schreiben" run as one 65-minute block.

Prüfungsformat & Aufgaben:

  • Part 1 (finding information on the job market): 5 matching items.
  • Part 2 (briefings and instructions): 2 true/false and 2 multiple-choice items.
  • Part 3 (working conditions): 4 matching items.
  • Part 4 (tasks and task allocation): 5 multiple-choice items.
  • Lesen und Schreiben Part 1: understanding a complaint or instruction, 2 multiple-choice items (count towards Reading).
Typische Prüfungsfalle:

Keyword traps: Exact word matches between question and text are often traps. Look for semantic paraphrases and subtle negatives (kaum, keineswegs, außer).

Erfolgs-Strategie:

LexDeutsch tip: plan about 10–11 minutes for each of the four parts and keep a few minutes for transferring your answers to the answer sheet S30. Ignore unknown technical terms that do not affect the answer.

Mustersatz:

„Gemäß § 4 der Betriebsvereinbarung ist die Inanspruchnahme von Gleitzeit an die vorherige Genehmigung durch den Abteilungsleiter gekoppelt.“

“Pursuant to Section 4 of the works agreement, utilizing flexible hours is contingent upon prior managerial approval.”

How many points do you need to pass?

Each of the four skills is worth 60 points, 240 points in total. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points. Points are given only for correct answers; nothing is deducted for wrong ones.

2. Listening60 points36 (one skill may have 24–35)Hören 20 min + Part 1 of Hören und Schreiben
3. Writing (complaint reply, phone note, language elements, forum post)60 points36 (one skill may have 24–35)in the parts of 20, 5 and 35 min
4. Speaking (Parts 1A/1B/1C, 2, 3)60 points36 (one skill may have 24–35)approx. 16 min, no preparation
telc B2 Beruf (DTB B2) overall240 pointsat least 144 in total-
Example: Reading 50, Listening 50, Writing 30, Speaking 40 = 170 points – passed, because the total is above 144 and the weaker Writing score lies in the 24–35 range that is compensated. With only 20 points in Writing (below 24) the exam would be failed. So don’t neglect any skill.

Model Reply to a Complaint (DIN 5008)

In "Lesen und Schreiben" Part 2 you reply to a customer complaint and make a solution possible. In the exam you write an e-mail; subject line, salutation and closing work the same way. This model reply shows the structure: thanks and regret, clarifying the facts, a concrete solution, asking for a response:

How do you split your writing time in the exam?

You write in three exam parts: in the 20-minute part "Lesen und Schreiben" you reply to a customer complaint after two reading items, in the 5-minute part "Hören und Schreiben" you fill in a phone note, and in the 35-minute part "Sprachbausteine und Schreiben" a forum post on topic A or B follows 12 gaps. No word count is set; the times below are LexDeutsch recommendations.

Lesen und Schreiben: approx. 3 min

Read the complaint (Part 1)

Read the complaint carefully and answer the 2 multiple-choice items. Mark what the customer is annoyed about and what they expect.

Lesen und Schreiben: approx. 17 min

Reply to the complaint (Part 2)

Thank and apologise, clarify the facts, offer a concrete solution and ask for a response. Subject line without a full stop, comma after the salutation, no comma after the closing.

Hören und Schreiben: 5 min

Phone note

You hear the message only once: note name, contact/phone, further information and "to do" in keywords. What counts is whether the details are right.

Sprachbausteine und Schreiben: approx. 25 min

Forum post

After the language elements (approx. 10 min), choose topic A or B, state your opinion, support it with reasons and examples, write in paragraphs and check for errors at the end.

How does the oral exam work without preparation time?

The oral exam lasts approx. 16 minutes in pairs. There is no preparation time: you get the tasks directly in the exam. Two examiners are present; one leads the conversation, the other observes. This is how it goes:

Parts 1A–1C: you choose one of two topics and talk about it for approx. 2 minutes, then the examiners ask questions for approx. 2 minutes. In 1C you explain one aspect of your partner’s talk in approx. ½ minute, so listen carefully.
Part 2 (approx. 3 min): an informal chat with colleagues during a break, using "du". Tell, ask, react – no agreement is needed here.
Part 3 (approx. 4 min): you solve a workplace problem together. Clarify what needs to be done and who takes on which task, and talk about long-term improvements, so that together you arrive at a plan of who does what.
Because there is no preparation time: practise speaking freely beforehand and learn phrases for opening, asking back, disagreeing and splitting tasks. A memorised text sounds stiff.

I actively use at least 30 professional noun-verb collocations (e.g. in Betracht ziehen, zur Verfügung stehen).

Frequently asked questions

How many points do you need to pass telc B2 Beruf?

The exam has four skills worth 60 points each, 240 points in total: Reading, Listening, Writing (including the language elements) and Speaking. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points.

How long does each part of the exam take?

The written exam lasts 125 minutes without a break: Reading 45, Lesen und Schreiben 20, Listening 20, Hören und Schreiben 5 and Sprachbausteine und Schreiben 35 minutes. The oral exam lasts approx. 16 minutes in pairs, with no preparation time.

Can a good reading score make up for weak writing?

Yes, within limits: one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points, the total is at least 144 and the other three skills have at least 36 each. Example: Reading 50, Listening 50, Writing 30, Speaking 40 = 170 – passed; with 20 points in Writing the exam would be failed.

How does telc B2 Beruf differ from the Goethe-Zertifikat B2?

telc B2 Beruf (DTB B2) focuses on the workplace: meetings, customer complaints, work instructions and conversations with colleagues. The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 tests general and social topics. The funded BAMF vocational language courses at B2 level end with the DTB B2.

What must be right in a DIN 5008 business letter?

The subject line has no word “Betreff:” and no full stop at the end. The salutation is followed by a comma and the first sentence starts in lowercase unless it begins with a noun; there is no comma after “Mit freundlichen Grüßen”.

My speaking partner hardly talks – will my score suffer?

No, you are not penalised for your partner’s silence. You are expected, however, to keep the conversation going with open questions such as “Wie sehen Sie das?”, because interaction is assessed too.

Who pays for the vocational language course and the exam?

Recipients of Bürgergeld, unemployment benefit (SGB III) or AsylbLG benefits are exempt from the costs of the BAMF vocational language course; employed people above the income threshold pay 50%. If you fail, you get one free repeat, either the exam or a 300-unit repeat course, provided your attendance was at least 85%.
