1. How is the exam structured and how many points do you need?
Why the total and at least three strong skills count
The exam LexDeutsch trains as telc B2 Beruf is the DTB B2 (Deutsch-Test für den Beruf, telc). The written part takes 125 minutes without a break: reading (45 min), reading and writing (20 min), listening (20 min), listening and writing with the phone memo (5 min), and language elements and writing with the forum post (35 min). The oral exam takes about 16 minutes per pair, with no preparation time. There are 240 points, 60 each for reading, listening, writing and speaking; the language elements count towards writing. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points.
Reading
45 min + Part 1 of Reading and WritingTarget: 36 pts · min. 24
- Reading Parts 1–4 (18 items)45 Min.
- Reading and Writing Part 1 (2 multiple choice)20 Min.*
Listening
20 min + Part 1 of Listening and WritingTarget: 36 pts · min. 24
- Listening Parts 1–4 (19 items)20 Min.
- Listening and Writing Part 1: reason for the call5 Min.*
Writing
across three exam sectionsTarget: 36 pts · min. 24
- Reply to a complaint (Reading and Writing Part 2)20 Min.*
- Phone memo (Listening and Writing Part 2)5 Min.*
- Language elements Parts 1–2 (12 gaps) + forum post35 Min.
Speaking
about 16 min per pair, no preparationTarget: 36 pts · min. 24
- Part 1A–1C: topic, examiners’ questions, partner’s aspectca. 2 + 2 + ½ Min.
- Part 2: chat with colleagues in a breakca. 3 Min.
- Part 3: discussing solutionsca. 4 Min.
* Shared section: Reading and Writing (20 min) and Listening and Writing (5 min) give points both to reading or listening and to writing. The language elements count towards writing.
Pass rule: An example: reading 50, listening 50, writing 30, speaking 40 gives 170 of 240 points – a pass, because three skills have at least 36 points and the 30 in writing lie in the 24–35 compensation range. With only 20 points in writing (below 24) the exam would be failed. So build in a safety margin across all skills.
2. How much time per day do you need? The 75–90-minute system for working people
Maximum cognitive retention without academic burnout
Spaced Repetition & Vocab
Right after waking or on the commute: 25-30 Anki flashcards (noun-verb pairs, prepositions, business terms). Pristine cognitive capacity.
Target Skill of the Day
One dedicated skill per day: Mon = Reading, Tue = Language elements, Wed = Listening & phone memo, Thu = Writing (complaint reply, forum post), Fri = Speaking. Always timed!
Timed Pressure & Audit
Saturday morning: complete a full exam module under actual constraints. Verify against answer keys, log errors in the diagnostic tracker.
3. The 8-Week Master Curriculum
Week 1: Diagnostic Baseline, Exam Architecture & Core Business Vocab
Determine your exact baseline, understand the pass rule (at least 144 of 240 points, and 36 of 60 in at least three skills) and master the first 100 core business terms.
Daily Action Plan
Calculate precise error percentages in Reading, Language Elements, and Listening.
Categorize each mistake: vocabulary gap, grammar trap, or time pressure?
Import 30 critical terms (warning letter, core hours, audit, probation) into Anki.
Memorize 20 preposition pairs with governing case (hinweisen auf, verhandeln über).
Work through 3 audio sets with transcript: highlight turn-taking and pivot markers.
Test all 100 vocabulary cards. Target: >85% recall rate.
Baseline benchmarked; error journal established; 100 business terms anchored in memory.
4. Which preparation mistakes cost points in the exam?
Why even fluent non-native speakers drop points on technicalities
Trap 1: Passive Vocabulary Scanning instead of Active Spaced Repetition
Simply reading word lists keeps vocabulary passive. Under exam conditions, words fail to activate. Solution: Digital flashcards (Anki) embedding full sentences and bidirectional active recall.
Trap 2: Neglecting form and structure in the writing tasks
Even well-written German loses points if parts of the task are missing or the text is hard to follow – under the DTB B2 marking criteria, communicative task completion counts too: no proper salutation in the complaint reply, no suggested solution, no paragraphs in the forum post. Solution: practise a fixed structure for both text types and tick off every point of the task.
Trap 3: Generic B2 Words instead of Workplace DeuFöV Terminology
telc B2 Beruf assesses workplace workflows, labor law, and business dealings. Using informal words like "Chef" instead of "Vorgesetzter" caps your score. Solution: Stick to authorized DeuFöV occupational terminology.
Trap 4: Leaving Zero Time Buffer for Transferring Answers to the Bubble Sheet
When the time is up, papers are collected immediately. Answers left only in the test booklet earn zero points. Solution: Transfer your answers to the answer sheet well before the end of each section.
Trap 5: Monopolizing the Oral Exam instead of Collaborative Exchange
Parts 2 and 3 are conversations, not monologues. Our tip: don’t talk over your partner, respond to their arguments – ask follow-up questions, agree, chip in politely („Wie sehen Sie das?“).

Frequently asked questions
Are 8 weeks enough to pass telc B2 Beruf?
Yes, if you start from a solid B1 level and study 8 to 12 hours a week following a fixed plan. What matters most is training in the exam format: the reply to a complaint, the forum post, the phone memo, the language elements and the flow of the oral exam, which has no preparation time.
Can I shorten the preparation to 4 weeks?
Yes, but then you need about 20 to 25 hours a week. Merge two weeks of the plan into one: weeks 1+2 (reading and basics), 3+4 (language elements and listening), 5+6 (writing and speaking), 7+8 (simulations).
How do I study for telc B2 Beruf while working full time?
Work in fixed time blocks: about 20 minutes of vocabulary flashcards in the morning, 45 minutes on one skill each evening (e.g. Mon reading, Tue listening, Wed writing, Thu language elements) and a 90-minute simulation under exam conditions on Saturday.
How many points do I need to pass telc B2 Beruf?
You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking); one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points. The language elements count towards writing.
How long is the telc B2 Beruf oral exam?
The oral exam takes about 16 minutes per pair, and there is no preparation time. Part 1: talk about a topic, answer the examiners’ questions and explain one aspect of your partner’s talk; Part 2: a chat with colleagues during a break; Part 3: work out together how to solve a problem at work.
Can I use a dictionary in the exam?
No. Dictionaries, mobile phones and other electronic aids are not allowed in the telc B2 Beruf exam.
Who pays for the B2 vocational language course?
The authorization is usually issued by the Jobcenter or the Federal Employment Agency. The BAMF course is free if you receive Bürgergeld, unemployment benefit (SGB III) or benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act; employed people with an income above the threshold pay a 50% contribution.
