1. What matters in each part of the exam?
Actionable strategies for reading, listening, writing, and speaking
Reading (Parts 1–4)
45 Min. • 60 Pkt.Never translate linearly from beginning to end! Rely strictly on scanning and synonym mapping.
Part 1: The 10-Minute Matching Rule
Read the 5 situations first and highlight key words. Then skim the texts only for the matching information. LexDeutsch tip: about 10 minutes at most for all 5 matching items.
Parts 2 & 4: The Multiple-Choice Distractor Trap
Warning: if an answer option uses exactly the same wording as the text, be careful. The correct answer is often phrased differently, as a synonym or paraphrase.
Language Elements (Parts 1-2)
Teil der 35 Min. • 6 Pkt. im SchreibenEvery single cloze gap obeys a strict rule: governing case, conjunction word-order, or fixed collocation.
The 1-Minute-Per-Gap Pacing Rule
Never stall for more than 60 seconds on an ambiguous gap. Pick your best instinct, add a question mark in the margin, and move on. Leave zero empty answers.
Collocation Trigger Recognition
Often the gap asks for the right light verb (zur Verfügung... [stellen], in Betracht... [ziehen]). Memorise the 50 most important collocations.
Listening (Parts 1–4) + Phone Memo
20 + 5 Min. • 60 Pkt.Every recording is played only once! The phone memo in “Listening and Writing” (5 min) is marked field by field as right or wrong and gives 6 points in writing.
Phone Memo: Read the Fields First
Before the message, read the memo fields: name, contact/phone, further information, “to do”. Before that you answer one question on the reason for the call. Write key words, not full sentences.
The German Spelling Alphabet (DIN 5009)
Callers spell names and e-mail addresses aloud ("Ö like Österreich", "S like Samuel"). You hear the message only once – not knowing the German spelling alphabet costs easy marks.
Writing: Complaint Reply & Forum Post
20 + 35 Min. • 60 Pkt.Cover every point of the task fully. No word count is set; a clear structure with salutation, paragraphs and sign-off following DIN 5008 helps with form and effect.
Time Split Across the Two Writing Sections
LexDeutsch tip: in “Reading and Writing” (20 min) about 5 minutes for the 2 reading items and about 15 for the complaint reply. In “Language Elements and Writing” (35 min) about 10 minutes for the 12 gaps, 20 for the forum post and 5 for a final check (verb position, adjective endings, punctuation).
Subject Line: Strictly No "Betreff:" Label
Under DIN 5008, the word "Betreff:" is NEVER written and there is no full stop at the end. Write the content directly: „Ihre Reklamation zu Bestellung Nr. 45892 vom 12. März 2026“. Give a concrete date for the solution in the text.
Oral Examination (Parts 1-3)
ca. 16 Min. • 60 Pkt.There is no preparation time – you speak spontaneously. How you respond to your partner is assessed too: talking over your partner or delivering monologues costs points.
Part 1: About 2 Minutes on a Topic
You choose one of two topics and speak for about 2 minutes without preparation (1A); then the examiners ask questions (1B) and you explain one aspect of your partner’s talk (1C). Practise with a stopwatch and a fixed structure: topic, own experience, two aspects, conclusion.
Parts 2 & 3: Active Turn-Taking Phrasing
Part 2 is a relaxed chat with colleagues during a break (informal “du”), Part 3 solving a problem together: clarify what needs doing and who takes on which task. Involve your partner actively: „Wie siehst du das?“ or „Was halten Sie davon, wenn wir …?“
2. Which 3 mistakes can cost you a pass?
Pitfalls you can avoid with a little planning
Trap 1: Answer Sheet Panic at the Last Minute
Marks in the booklet earn zero points. Transfer your answers to the official sheet before each section ends. Exam proctors collect papers instantly at the timer.
Trap 2: Writing to a Word Count Instead of to the Task
No word count is set in the exam. More text does not automatically mean more points – every sentence adds risk of errors and eats into checking time. LexDeutsch tip: about 150 words per text, but cover every point of the task fully.
Trap 3: Complete Silence during an Oral Blackout
Freezing is penalized as inadequate proficiency. Bridge the silence with pivot formulas: "Let me rephrase this thought differently..." or "Another relevant facet is...".
3. What do you need to bring on exam day?
Mandatory items to bring and prohibited items in the exam hall
4. Quiz: Do You Know the Fallback Strategies?
Check your tactics regarding verbal paraphrasing and DIN 5008 norms
1. What should you do if a key German term slips your mind while you are talking about your topic in Part 1?
2. Why is the word "Betreff:" NOT written in a work e-mail or letter under DIN 5008?
2 typical exam scenarios

You are assessed individually, not as a pair. Use the situation: ask friendly questions, make suggestions and lead the conversation, which shows your interaction skills.
