5 Tips for telc B2 Business German in 2026: Strategies, DIN 5008 & Assessment Criteria

Why is general German study not enough for B2 Beruf?

Hundreds of hours of general German study by no means guarantee a pass in telc B2 Beruf. The reason is simple: this exam does not test your ability to chat about holidays or novels, but how you use German at work. Offering no solution in a complaint reply, noting a phone number wrongly in the phone memo or guessing verb prepositions in the language elements costs valuable points despite good general fluency.

The following 5 pillars focus your preparation on what the exam actually assesses. They follow the format of the DTB B2 (Deutsch-Test für den Beruf, telc), which LexDeutsch trains as telc B2 Beruf, and the content of the BAMF vocational language courses.

Which 5 tips really help you pass?

1. Language Elements: Master Cloze Mechanics & Preposition Government

Säule 1

Systematic decoding of 12 gaps: Part 1 (6 gaps, words a–j) and Part 2 (6 multiple choice)

In Language Elements (they count towards writing, 12 × 0.5 = 6 points, and share one 35-minute section with the forum post), guessing by feel easily costs marks. Each gap targets a concrete grammatical signal: prepositional verb government (dative vs accusative), paired conjunctions, genitive relative pronouns or workplace noun-verb collocations. Never look at a gap in isolation; always check the words right before and after it.

Audit subordinator clause markers: verb-final ordering after dass, weil, obwohl; subject-verb inversion following adverbials like infolgedessen, deshalb, trotzdem.
High-Yield Exam Model Phrase for Cloze Parts 1 & 2:

„Infolgedessen sehen wir uns gezwungen, unverzüglich rechtliche Schritte einzuleiten und vom geschlossenen Liefervertrag mit sofortiger Wirkung zurückzutreten.“

“Consequently, we find ourselves compelled to initiate legal proceedings immediately and withdraw from the concluded supply contract with immediate effect.”

Typical trap: The prepositions after "bitten" and "fragen" are easily confused. Remember: bitten um (+ Acc), but fragen nach (+ Dat).

2. Writing: Reply to a Complaint & Forum Post

Säule 2

Writing (60 points) is made up of four parts: complaint reply, forum post, phone memo and language elements

In writing you produce two texts: a reply to a complaint (“Reading and Writing”, 20 minutes together with 2 reading items) and a forum post on topic A or B (“Language Elements and Writing”, 35 minutes). Together with the phone memo and the language elements they make up the 60 writing points. Texts are assessed on four criteria: task completion, communicative design, formal accuracy and range of language. No word count is set. LexDeutsch tip: about 150 words per text, covering every point of the task fully – a forgotten point costs task-completion points.

E-mail form under DIN 5008: subject line without the word "Betreff:" and without a full stop; comma after the salutation, then continue in lower case (unless it is a noun).
Complaint reply: thank them for the message, show understanding, clarify the facts, offer a concrete solution and make a clarification possible (call-back, appointment, contact person).
Forum post: state your opinion clearly, support it with reasons and an example from work, write in paragraphs and end with a short conclusion.
Hit the right tone: polite and solution-oriented in the complaint reply, factual yet personal in the forum post.
Correct sign-off: „Mit freundlichen Grüßen“ without a comma, your name below it.
Model paragraph for a reply to a complaint:

„Vielen Dank für Ihre Nachricht. Es tut uns sehr leid, dass die bestellten Teile nicht rechtzeitig bei Ihnen angekommen sind. Wir haben den Fall geprüft und schicken Ihnen die fehlenden Teile bis Freitag kostenlos zu. Wenn Sie Fragen haben, erreichen Sie mich direkt unter der Durchwahl 245.“

“Thank you for your message. We are very sorry that the parts you ordered did not reach you on time. We have looked into the matter and will send you the missing parts free of charge by Friday. If you have any questions, you can reach me directly on extension 245.”

Typical trap: Apologising in the complaint reply without offering a solution or a way to clarify the matter does not fully complete the task!

3. Listening & Phone Memo: Deciphering the Speaker’s Intent

Säule 3

Listening (60 points): every recording played once; the phone memo in “Listening and Writing” counts towards writing

In Listening (20 minutes, 4 parts) every recording is played only once. It is followed directly by “Listening and Writing” (5 minutes): you identify the reason for a call (1 multiple-choice item) and fill in a phone memo – name, contact/phone, further information and “to do”. This message, too, is played only once. The fields are marked right or wrong and together give 6 points in writing. So practise taking down names spelled with the German spelling alphabet and long strings of digits.

Read the items before each recording: underline key words and anticipate which piece of information is needed.
Master the German phonetic spelling alphabet (DIN 5009): A as Aachen, B as Berlin, C as Chemnitz, D as Düsseldorf, S as Stuttgart, Z as Zwickau, umlauts Ä, Ö, Ü.
Chunk phone numbers into rhythm clusters: German proctors and recordings dictate phone sequences in pairs or triplets (e.g. 089 / 45 12 89 0).
Detect acoustic negators and semantic pivots: expressions like "keineswegs", "kaum", "außer", or verbs like "ablehnen" reverse conversational conclusions.
Model call for the phone memo:

„Hier spricht Frau Dr. Weber von der Kanzlei Schmidt & Partner. Ich rufe bezüglich des Gerichtstermins am kommenden Dienstag an. Meine Durchwahl lautet 069 / 78 45 12, buchstabiert: W-E-B-E-R. Bitte richten Sie Herrn Müller aus, dass er mich dringend bis 14:00 Uhr zurückrufen möge.“

“This is Dr. Weber from the law firm Schmidt & Partner calling. I am calling regarding the court hearing next Tuesday. My direct extension is 069 / 78 45 12, spelled W-E-B-E-R. Please inform Mr. Müller to return my call urgently before 2:00 PM.”

Typical trap: Every field of the phone memo is marked only right or wrong. If one digit of the number or one letter of the name is missing, that field earns nothing.

4. Oral Examination: Partner Calibration, Moderation & Problem-Solving (60 Points)

Säule 4

60 points, a paired exam of about 16 minutes, no preparation time

The oral exam (60 points) is a paired exam of about 16 minutes with no preparation time. Part 1: you speak for about 2 minutes on one of two topics (1A), answer the examiners’ questions (1B) and explain one aspect of your partner’s talk (1C). Part 2: a relaxed chat with colleagues during a break (about 3 minutes, informal “du”). Part 3: you solve a workplace problem together and clarify what needs doing and who takes on which task (about 4 minutes). The biggest myth is that you must talk over your partner. How you respond to your partner is assessed too – monologues waste points.

Deliver Part 1A (talking about a topic) with a clear thread: name the topic, personal experience, pros and cons at work, short conclusion – spontaneously, without notes.
Part 2 (chat with colleagues): ask and tell in the informal “du” form: „Wie läuft das bei dir?“, „Hast du damit schon Erfahrungen gemacht?“
Disagree diplomatically: replace blunt contradictions with: "You raise a valid concern, however we must also consider that..."
Part 3 (discussing solutions): agree on a plan together – clarify what needs doing and who takes on which task („Wer kümmert sich um die Angebote?“), and suggest a long-term improvement.
High-Scoring Diplomatic Objection & Consensus Phrase:

„Ihr Vorschlag ist durchaus bedenkenswert. Allerdings befürchte ich, dass dadurch die Personalkosten unser Budget überschreiten würden. Wie wäre es, wenn wir als Kompromiss zunächst eine vierwöchige Testphase vereinbaren?“

“Your suggestion is certainly worth considering. However, I fear that labor costs would exceed our allocated budget. How about we agree on an initial four-week trial period as a viable compromise?”

Typical trap: If a partner struggles acoustically or lexically, never freeze them out. Our tip: help them with gentle follow-up questions – Parts 2 and 3 are conversations, not monologues.

5. Time Budget per Section & Answer Sheet Discipline

Säule 5

How to split the time of each written section and transfer every answer in time

Besides knowledge, time management decides a lot in the written part. The written part takes 125 minutes without a break: reading 45 minutes, reading and writing 20, listening 20, listening and writing 5, language elements and writing 35 minutes. Reading and “reading and writing” run as one 65-minute block. In every section, keep the last minutes for transferring your answers to the S30 answer sheet.

Reading (45 minutes): Parts 1–4 (LexDeutsch tip: about 10–12 minutes per part). Flag uncertain questions and move on at once.
Reading and Writing (20 minutes): first the 2 reading items on the complaint, then about 15 minutes for the reply e-mail.
Language Elements and Writing (35 minutes): about 10 minutes for the 12 gaps, the rest for the forum post and a short final check.
Transfer: put all answers on the answer sheet in time. Anything left only in the booklet earns no points!
The Golden Exam Rule for the Answer Sheet:

„Rechnen Sie niemals mit einer Nachspielzeit! Nach Ablauf der Bearbeitungszeit fordert die Prüfungsaufsicht alle Kandidaten auf, die Stifte abzulegen. Wer dann noch weiterschreibt, verstößt gegen die Anweisungen der Aufsicht.“

“Never count on extra time! When the time is up, the invigilators ask all candidates to put their pens down. Anyone who keeps writing breaks the invigilators’ instructions.”

Typical trap: The invigilators tell you which pen or pencil to use. Follow their instructions exactly and transfer every answer clearly to the S30 answer sheet.

3 practical scenarios on DIN 5008, passing scores, and partner dynamics

1. What is the minimum score required to pass telc Deutsch B2 Beruf?

2. Which formal mistake in a work e-mail under DIN 5008 (e.g. the reply to a complaint) is particularly typical?

3. How should you respond if your assigned partner struggles or freezes in the oral exam?

Scoring: 4 × 60 = 240; pass from 144 with 36 in 3 of 4 skills

Frequently asked questions

How many points do you need to pass telc Deutsch B2 Beruf?

There are 240 points, 60 each for reading, listening, writing and speaking; the language elements count towards writing. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points.

Can a strong skill make up for a weak one?

Yes, but only one skill and only down to a limit. Example: reading 50, listening 50, writing 30, speaking 40 gives 170 of 240 points – a pass. With only 20 points in writing (below 24) you would fail despite a good total.

How long does it take to prepare for telc Deutsch B2 Beruf?

It depends on your starting level. With solid B1, the key is regular practice of the exam formats: complaint replies, forum posts, phone memos, language elements and workplace listening texts.

Where are points easily lost?

Typical stumbling blocks are the language elements, because verb prepositions and connectors cannot be guessed by feel, in writing when a point of the task is missing, and in the phone memo, because each field is marked only right or wrong.

Is there preparation time before the oral exam?

No. The oral exam (about 16 minutes per pair) starts without preparation time: in Part 1 you choose one of two topics and speak freely about it for about 2 minutes. So practise speaking spontaneously with a fixed structure.

What matters most in the oral exam?

Besides your language, the interaction with your partner: listening actively, asking follow-up questions, disagreeing politely and, in Part 3, clarifying together what needs doing and who takes on which task. A pure monologue misses the point of the conversation tasks.

Which writing tasks are there in telc B2 Beruf?

Two texts: a reply to a complaint (in “Reading and Writing”, 20 minutes) and a forum post on topic A or B (in “Language Elements and Writing”, 35 minutes). No word count is set; LexDeutsch recommends about 150 words and covering every point of the task fully.
