1. What is the difference between the process and the state passive?

Why do German corporations emphasize the passive? In official memos, audit reports, and defect notifications, the objective procedure and final outcome take precedence over individual blame. Learn to distinguish workflow from state:

Process Passive (werden + Participle II)

Emphasizes an ongoing action taking place at a given moment. The individual actor steps into the background.

„Die Server werden gewartet.“

↳ Die Techniker sind aktuell bei der Arbeit.

State Passive (sein + Participle II)

Emphasizes the static final condition resulting from a completed action. The process has concluded.

„Die Server sind gewartet.“

↳ Die Wartung ist abgeschlossen, Systeme laufen wieder.

2. The Process Passive in 5 Tenses at a Glance

In executive reporting and telc B2 Sprachbausteine cloze tests, you need to switch between these tenses with confidence:

Aktiv:

Die Buchhaltung prüft die Eingangsrechnung.

Passiv:

Die Eingangsrechnung wird von der Buchhaltung geprüft.

↳ The incoming invoice is being verified by accounting.

Active workflows, recurring daily office routines.

Simple Past (Präteritum)wurde / wurden + Partizip II
Aktiv:

Der Geschäftsführer unterzeichnete den Mietvertrag.

Passiv:

Der Mietvertrag wurde vom Geschäftsführer unterzeichnet.

↳ The lease agreement was signed by the managing director.

Present Perfect (Perfekt)ist / sind + Partizip II + worden

3. Von or durch: which preposition goes with the passive?

A typical source of errors in the passive is the choice of preposition. Follow this immutable grammatical rule:

von + Dative: The Personal Actor or Institution

Used for conscious human agents, departments, firms, or authorities acting deliberately: "approved by the CEO", "certified by the audit board".

„Das Gutachten wurde vom Wirtschaftsprüfer erstellt.“

„Die Genehmigung wurde von der Behörde erteilt.“

durch + Accusative: The Instrument, Cause, or Mechanism

Used for technical tools, impersonal causes, software systems, or unexpected events: "remedied through a software patch", "delayed by power outage".

„Die Kosten wurden durch den Einsatz moderner Software gesenkt.“

„Der Fehler wurde durch einen Systemabsturz verursacht.“

4. Which passive replacement forms do you need at B2/C1?

Relying exclusively on "werden + Participle II" results in monotonous prose. Advanced B2/C1 workplace writing expects versatile alternative structures:

1. sein + zu + Infinitive (Meaning: must or can)

Mandatory / Feasible (High Exam Frequency)

Expresses corporate obligation (must) or, when negated, prohibition (must not): "Confidential data is not to be emailed".

Ersatzform:

„Der Prüfbericht ist bis Freitag um 12:00 Uhr einzureichen.“

Bedeutung (Passiv mit Modalverb):

↳ Der Prüfbericht muss bis Freitag eingereicht werden.

↳ The audit report is to be submitted by Friday at 12:00 PM (= must be submitted).

2. sich lassen + Infinitive (Meaning: can / is able to be)

Feasibility / Solution

Extremely frequent in technical memos, troubleshooting manuals, and feasibility studies. Expresses passive with "can".

Ersatzform:

„Dieses technische Problem lässt sich durch ein Software-Update beheben.“

Bedeutung (Passiv mit Modalverb):

↳ Dieses Problem kann durch ein Software-Update behoben werden.

↳ This technical issue can be resolved via a software update.

3. Adjectives ending in -bar / -lich / -abel (Meaning: can be done)

Compact Professional Vocabulary

Enables dense, executive-style phrasing: machbar (feasible), lieferbar (deliverable), realisierbar (realizable), vermeidbar (avoidable).

Ersatzform:

„Die entstandenen Mehrkosten sind für den Kunden vollkommen nachvollziehbar.“

Bedeutung (Passiv mit Modalverb):

↳ Die Mehrkosten können vom Kunden nachvollzogen werden.

↳ The additional expenses can be fully comprehended by the client.

4. Light Verb Constructions with Passive Meaning (B2/C1 Masterclass)

Executive German Register

Key corporate formulas: zur Anwendung kommen (to be applied), in Erwägung gezogen werden (to be considered), zur Diskussion stehen (to be debated).

Ersatzform:

„Der Reklamationsantrag befindet sich derzeit in Bearbeitung.“

Bedeutung (Passiv mit Modalverb):

↳ Der Reklamationsantrag wird derzeit bearbeitet.

↳ The complaint claim is currently undergoing processing (= is being processed).

5. Verbs Incapable of Forming a Passive (Passive Taboos)

Not every German verb permits passive transformation. Forcing these into passive constitutes severe grammatical error:

Verben mit „sein“ im Perfekt

gehen, kommen, ankommen, abfahren, steigen, fallen. Es gibt kein Passiv: *„Das Paket wird angekommen“ ist falsch!

Echte reflexive Verben

sich freuen, sich erkundigen, sich beschweren, sich schämen. Reflexive Verben können niemals ein Passiv bilden.

Verben des Habens & Wissens

haben, besitzen, kennen, wissen, enthalten. Man sagt nicht: *„Das Auto wird von ihm gehabt“.

Kosten- & Maßangaben

kosten, wiegen, betragen, dauern. Das Projekt kostet 5.000 € (kein Passiv möglich).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the core difference between Vorgangspassiv and Zustandspassiv?

Vorgangspassiv (werden + Participle II) describes an ongoing action or procedure ("The invoice is being examined"). Zustandspassiv (sein + Participle II) describes the finalized state afterwards ("The invoice is examined and ready").

When do you use "von" versus "durch" in German passive?

"von + Dative" indicates the conscious human actor or institution ("signed by the director"). "durch + Accusative" indicates the instrument, cause, or technical tool ("caused by a server glitch").

Which passive replacement forms are most useful for telc B2 Beruf?

The 4 vital forms are: 1) sein + zu + infinitive (obligation/duty), 2) sich lassen + infinitive (feasibility/can), 3) adjectives in -bar/-lich, and 4) light verb constructions (Funktionsverbgefüge).

Why is "Die Ware ist geliefert geworden" grammatically incorrect?

In the German passive perfect tense, the auxiliary "werden" is shortened to "worden" (without the prefix ge-!). "Geworden" only exists as a full verb. The correct passive is strictly: "Die Ware ist geliefert worden".

How is the passive formed with modal verbs in the past tense?

Formula: Modal verb in Präteritum + Participle II + werden. Example: "Das Projekt musste gestoppt werden" or "Die Frist konnte eingehalten werden".

Which German verbs cannot form a personal passive?

Verbs taking "sein" in the perfect tense (gehen, ankommen), reflexive verbs (sich freuen), verbs lacking an accusative object, and stative verbs of possession (haben, besitzen, kennen, wissen).
