Updated: · LexDeutsch editorial team
About 16 minutes in pairs with no preparation time: how to structure all 3 parts, work well with your partner and score confidently in Speaking.

Is there preparation time before the oral exam?
No. You get the tasks directly in the exam: in Part 1A you choose one of two topics and start talking right away. That makes preparation in the weeks before all the more important:
How is the oral exam scored?
Speaking is worth up to 60 of 240 points. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points. Marking follows the four criteria of the DTB B2; under each one is our practice tip:
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| I Kommunikative Aufgabenbewältigung (completing the task) Our tip: Cover all points of the task, use the speaking time, and in Part 3 settle who takes on which task. | maximum per part:
|
| II Kommunikative Gestaltung (shaping the conversation) Our tip: Structure your turns, respond to your partner, ask follow-up questions and link ideas with connectors. | II–IV together up to 30 |
| III Formale Richtigkeit (accuracy) Our tip: Practise verb-final word order in subordinate clauses, the passive, Konjunktiv II and correct endings. | |
| IV Spektrum sprachlicher Mittel (range of language) Our tip: Workplace vocabulary, noun-verb collocations and B2 connectors instead of everyday basics; speak clearly and at a calm pace. | |
| Speaking in total: up to 60 of 240 points | |

Detaillierter Leitfaden zu Teil 1, Teil 2 und Teil 3
Talking about a Topic & Answering Questions
Prüfungsformat & Aufgabenstellung
You choose one of two work-related topics and talk about it for about 2 minutes without preparation (1A). Then the examiners ask questions for about 2 minutes (1B). In 1C your partner explains one aspect of your talk in about ½ minute – and you do the same for theirs.
Erfolgsstrategie
Follow the 4-phase sequence: 1. Introduction & Relevance (20s), 2. Core features & practical benefits (50s), 3. Pros/cons or personal experience (30s), 4. Conclusion & lead into the questions (15s). Never recite a memorised text!
Typische Prüfungsfalle
The memorising trap: a memorised text rarely fits the chosen topic exactly and sounds monotonous. Speaking freely along a clear thread sounds more fluent and lets you react better to the questions in 1B.

What if your exam partner is difficult?
In der Paarprüfung sind Sie auf Ihren Partner angewiesen. Wenn dieser blockiert oder das Gespräch an sich reißt, zählt Ihr Verhalten bei Aufgabenbewältigung und Ausdruck:
Case 1: The Dominating Partner (Monologuers)
If your partner takes up all the speaking time, do not lose valuable time by staying silent! Wait for a brief breath and cut in politely: "Darf ich an dieser Stelle kurz einhaken? Ein weiterer Aspekt ist..." or, casually in Part 2: "Moment, dazu muss ich kurz was sagen…"
Case 2: The Shy or Blocked Partner
When your partner falters, do not fill the gap with a long monologue. Show interaction skills by asking open questions: "Herr Schmidt, wie schätzen Sie diesen Kostenpunkt ein?" – in Part 2 using "du": "Und wie siehst du das?"

Frequently asked questions
Is there preparation time before the oral exam?
No. In telc B2 Beruf (DTB B2) there is no preparation time: in Part 1A you choose one of two topics and talk about it straight away for about 2 minutes. So practise speaking freely beforehand instead of memorising texts.
What happens if my partner barely speaks or makes severe errors?
You are not penalised for your partner’s shortcomings. If you actively keep the dialogue going, support them politely and drive the task forward, you show exactly the interaction skills that are assessed.
How many points do you need in Speaking for telc B2 Beruf?
Speaking is worth up to 60 of 240 points; aim for at least 36. You pass with at least 144 of 240 points in total and at least 36 of 60 in at least three of the four skills; one weaker skill is compensated if it has 24–35 points.
How significant is grammatical correctness compared to fluency?
Fluency and comprehensibility outweigh minor grammatical endings. If you make an agreement slip, briefly correct yourself and continue smoothly. Never remain paralyzed in silence hunting for the perfect ending.
What should I do if I forget a specific technical word during the exam?
Paraphrase! Paraphrasing is a core B2 compensation strategy. Say: "Mir fällt gerade nicht der genaue Fachbegriff ein, aber ich meine das Gerät, mit dem man Dokumente digitalisiert..." – that keeps the conversation flowing.
When will I receive my oral exam score?
The examiners on site do not tell you your result. You receive it later, together with your overall result, via your test centre.
